Located in Southeastern Virginia, Darkwater Boerboels is adjacent to the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge consists of over 111,000 acres of forested wetlands. This provides the dogs and us an endless amount of entertainment with the ability to stretch our legs and explore. An abundance of wildlife is present including the Virginia Black Bear who regularly taunts the dogs. Lake Drummond, at 3,100 acres, is the largest natural lake in Virginia, and is located in the heart of the swamp.

My husband and I have owned and trained large breed dogs for many years. It was when we acquired our first Boerboel Koa in 2002 that I became interested in competition obedience. He was a bundle of energy and needed a job to do at all times. As an ambassador for the breed all who met him fell in love with his sweet nature and big block head.

Boerboels are large mastiff type dogs originating from South Africa. The word Boerboel is Afrikaans for "Farmers Dog" and they must be able to do many tasks in their native land. This breed is a reliable, versatile and obedient family dog who is intelligent and self assured. They are not unsociable or vicious but can be aloof and strong willed. Boerboels are not for first time dog owners or necessarily the dog for everyone. Time and commitment is a requirement from their people and they are happiest when there is a job for them to do.
